A Break out box (BOB) is a passive device to be inserted between two wire connected equipment. It acts as test point panel and / or patch panel for several lines (from a few to 256 lines), each line with specific gauges (from AWG22 to AWG8). It allows the insertion of measurement point or discrete components. It can route either signal lines, either power lines.
In association with a break out box, a Failure box (FBOX) simulates several kinds of dynamic failures, like open / close routed lines and regulated short-circuit (up to 180A) or unregulated short-circuit (up to 40A) of lines. It can be driven in local and remote mode and is based on relay or MOSFET technologies.
These equipment are used during AIT / AIV phases for investigation purpose and failure simulation between spacecraft equipment.
